French Onion Gruyere Hearts
- 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- Slices of Gruyere or Swiss Cheese (from deli
- 1 egg
- 1. In a large skillet, cook the onions in butter over medium-low heat until onions are golden brown, stirring frequently. Remove with a slotted spoon; cool to room temperature.
- 2. On a lightly floured surface, roll puff pastry into an 11×8-in. rectangle. Lay out cheese, distribute evenly over pastry. Cover with the onions.
- 3. Roll up 1 long side to the middle of the dough; roll up the other side so the 2 rolls meet in the center. Freeze for about 15 minutes to firm up enough to slice. Using a serrated knife, cut into 1/2-in. slices. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets until frozen and then package up until ready to bake (bake frozen). Preheat oven to 375°.
- 4. In a small bowl, whisk egg and water; brush over slices. Bake until puffed and golden brown, 12-14 minutes. Serve appetizers warm. Makes about 1 ½ dozen.
